چکیده

Accepted for publication 2 February 1993 Abstract One case of non-penetrance of the familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) gene at 59 years of age and late onset of polyps on endoscopy and biopsy in this and two other families is described. Screening protocols should include dental screening as well as indirect ophthalmoscopy and endoscopy to detect minimal manifestations of the gene. In the absence of a specific DNA predictive test, bowel screening should continue well beyond 30 years of age. (Gut 1993; 34: 1389-1393)

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a hereditary autosomal dominant cancer syndrome, results from germ line mutation or deletion of the Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) gene on chromosome 5q21. Patients with FAP suffer from multiple polyps mainly at the colorectal region as well as other parts of the gastrointestinal tract, which has propensity to transform into carcinoma. FAP has also...

Association of Pathogenic Missense and Nonsense Mutations in Mitochondrial COII Gene with Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP)

Nuclear genetic mutations have been extensively investigated in solid tumors. However, the role of the mitochondrial genome remains uncertain. Since the metabolism of solid tumors is associated with aerobic glycolysis and high lactate production, tumors may have mitochondrial dysfunctions. Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is a rare form‌ of colorectal cancer and an autosomal dominant inheri...

Cancer Prone Disease Section

The penetrance for colon polyps is close to 100% and bi-allelic MUTYH mutation carriers generally develop 10-100’s adenomatous polyps/adenomas of the colon and the rectum. Approximately one third of patients also develop polyps/adenomas in the upper gastrointestinal tract. Other manifestations frequently seen in Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP) are also present in minority of MAP patients: ...
